Swedish Massage is the most commonly used type of body work in the West. Often referred to as Classic Massage, it’s foundation stems from Western teachings of anatomy and physiology. It is designed to relieve muscle tension and promote relaxation through manipulation of the soft tissue with techniques including smooth, gliding strokes, kneading and friction. Although the principal goal of Swedish Massage is relaxation, it can also be hugely beneficial for improving circulation, increasing range of motion, breaking up knots or scar tissue and alleviating emotional stress.

Benefits of Swedish Massage

  • Rejuvenates and relaxes by increasing absorption of oxygen.

  • Relieves physical tension and aids injury rehabilitation.

  • Increases range of motion.

  • Expels toxins and encourages lymphatic drainage.

  • Improves mood, reduces anxiety and depression.

  • Promotes better sleep quality.

  • Stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system to promote relaxation.

  • Helps with management of chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, migraines.

Option for a light and gentle, relaxing treatment or deep and invigorating if needed.

Indian Head Massage derives from an Indian therapeutic system over 200 years old, called Ayurveda, which focuses on balance of the mind, body and spirit. It comprises of stretches, strokes and circular movements along acupressure points which in turn releases tension, increases circulation and improves concentration. It can provide relief from a number of issues such as eyestrain, headaches, neck stiffness, insomnia and anxiety and leaves the client feeling relaxed yet rejuvenated and focused.

Lymphatic drainage helps the body to flush out toxins and bacteria thus boosting immune response, reducing inflammation and enhancing oxygenation and recovery rates.

MLD uses very gentle pressure, meaning it is a very different experience from traditional massage. It involves shifting the skin with a series of pulsing movements in certain areas and directions to encourage drainage towards the lymphatic nodes. MLD can produce many physiological benefits whilst being very relaxing and bringing a wonderful sense of well being. Clients often fall asleep or drop into a highly relaxed state due to the slow rhythmic motion.

Benefits of Manual Lymphatic Drainage

  • Reduces swelling caused by excess fluid retention in the tissue.

  • Boosts the immune system if compromised or if working insufficiently after infection - it can be very beneficial if someone feels like they can’t shake a recent illness or if they repeatedly get ill.

  • Can reduce joint pain and swelling caused by rheumatoid arthritis.

  • Can improve blood flow for Chronic Venous Insufficiency.

  • May reduce symptoms of chronic conditions such as CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) and Fibromyalgia as they often involve tissue swelling and inflammation of the skin nerves.

  • MLD is particularly useful to reduce the risk of developing lymphoedema in post surgical patients. For example, a series of treatments can be helpful to reduce oedema and fibrosis and enhance recovery after a mastectomy where the lymphatic system may be compromised. (If you are seeking a series of treatments post surgery, this can be arranged with prior advice from your GP or surgical team)

PLEASE NOTE: MLD is not recommended for people with heart conditions, kidney problems, cellulitis, venous thrombosis or an active infection.

Pregnancy is a magical time, however, it can sometimes bring with it added stresses and discomfort from increased pressure on ligaments, joints and organs. Pregnancy massage can help to alleviate aches and pains whilst also providing the opportunity to take some well earned time for yourself to relax and bond with baby.

To ensure comfort, the client will be side-lying with pillows supporting bump, back, upper body and leg alignment. A number of techniques will be used including Swedish massage to work the muscles and ease tension, Indian Head massage to relieve stress and help you drop into a deeply relaxed state and if necessary, Manual Lymphatic Drainage can be performed on any areas where there is fluid retention such as the ankles, lower leg or wrists. While deep tissue work is not advised, it is still possible to use a reasonable amount of pressure to help get muscles moving and shifting to relieve tension. We do not have to treat pregnant woman like delicate flowers as they are in fact strong, amazing creatures who are growing another person!

Benefits of Pregnancy Massage

  • Calming the nervous system and reducing cortisol levels and stress, creating a sense of wellbeing and a peaceful environment for baby to grow and develop.

  • Reduce swelling and fluid retention which can contribute to common pregnancy complaints of carpal tunnel syndrome and tarsal tunnel syndrome.

  • Relieves muscular tension, joint aches, pregnancy related nerve pain, sciatica, SPD pain and other problems caused by postural change and hormone release during pregnancy.

  • Increases circulation helping to keep blood pressure balanced and boosting oxygen and nutrients for mum and baby.

  • Encourages endorphin release and oxytocin production, aiding hormone balance and prolactin production. Increased prolactin can stimulate mammary development leading to higher breastfeeding success rates. Plus the endorphins are passed on to baby too!

  • Regular massage during pregnancy can build a woman’s awareness of her body and enhance her relationship with baby. In our busy lives, relaxation can be an art that takes practice! The regular practice of relaxation and tuning in to your body can help with the ability to relax and let the oxytocin flow in the first stage of labour which in turn, can result in shorter and easier births.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to insurance reasons, pregnancy massage cannot be performed at Muscle Maintenance Massage until after the first trimester.
